In 1569, the papal bull Consueverunt Romani Pontifices by the Dominican Pope Pius V officially established the devotion to the rosary and the original 15 mysteries.

The five Luminous mysteries were added by Pope St. John Paul II in October 2002 in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae.
